low density cellular concrete road base & bridge approach fill

Long-term settlement of road base requires regular maintenance and/or overlays. This is particularly noticeable where the road base meets a bridge or overpass approach ramp. Continuing to add heavy aggregate-type overlays causes further settlement and repair costs.

A simple solution adopted by many State Departments of Transportation throughout the United States is to excavate either side of a bridge or overpass approach and replace that fill with low density concrete ranging from 25 to 40 pcf. This minimizes further settlement by decreasing the load on the sub-base. Pavement on top of the low density concrete fill is further protected from “heaving” caused from the freeze/thaw effect of water absorbed in gravel and dirt.

Equipment designed especially for rapid installation of low density concrete fills enables a typical 2,000-3,000 cubic yard bridge approach to be completed in two days which minimizes traffic related problems during construction.
